Cupidity, a raging fire's wild shocks,
Spreads its blaze, blinding and fiercely bold.
Each hour it expands, gaining the rocks,
And nightly meals for gold are hastily sold.
The champions of toil now must see,
This plague of Cupidity devours our stores,
In senate halls, markets, and academy.
May justice's angels bring their saving power,
Ay, sin did drag man from his blissful place,
From Eden's grace to hell's infernal chain.
Through veins it flows, a horror, crude and base,
Mocking our peace with restless, bitter pain.
O Lord of time, these deeds are dark and grim,
Thus deliver us from Cupidity's cruel whim.
