Memory

The Architecture of Memory: Writing Truth From Fragments Memory is rarely a straight line. It is built in fragments—a single phrase of classical verse heard years ago, the quiet shift of light across a studio desk, or the sudden, unbidden weight of an old habit. When we look back on our lives, we do not see a neatly bound volume with clean chapter breaks. Instead, we find scattered pages. We remember the texture of a moment rather than its full chronology; we hold onto how a room felt long after we have forgotten what was actually said inside it. For a long time, I tried to force my writing to fit strict, linear boundaries. I believed that to share a story or capture a experience, I had to begin at the chronological start and walk the reader step-by-step to the finish. But forcing memory into a rigid narrative often strips it of its quiet truth. Real life doesn't happen in outline format. It happens in impressions.
