Hearts Lute
Heart's Lute
How shall my silent Lute presume to sing,
When all its cords are tuned by your own hand?
Or strike sweet concord from a widowed string,
Which none but you can govern or command?
Look how the dark holds back the eager Light,
And keeps my longing bosom from your grace;
While every pulse that beats within the night
Chides the slow hours that hide your constant face.
Come then, my Love, and teach these frets to speak,
Ere sorrow dull the music we should make,
Towards your touch alone the silent seek
The sovereign chord that bids the soul awake.
Until thy finger play upon my heart,
I am, I am but wood and wire apart.
