A Rustic bard

            A Rustic Bard

A rustic bard once I met by the river's side,

Whose tender brow the peace of Eden wore;

"I shun," said he, "the highways crowned with pride,

For noisy routes were never fashioned mine.

I seek the grassy ways the wild flowers know,

And plant shady cedars there the travellers rest;

I raise cool fountains there the faint streams slow,

And behold, little oratories for the blest.

My humble chalet laughs through lavender,

White lilies breathe their incense round the door;

At lonely night the wayfarers linger there,

Till silence heals the wounds their hearts bore.

At dawn I lead them there the mountains rise,

As silence builds the soul that seeks the skies.”
