Teresa Brewer (A tear fell) 1950
No gold, nor palace have I in my name,
Only in paradise such gifts I can bring,
Why mock and cast on me such cruel blame?
Between our souls a ceaseless conflict lies,
I bid farewell with flowers in my hand,
You praise your riches, the crypto, and life
Where luxuries have scarred the innocent land.
Accept the poor man's roses, fresh and true,
Whose tears reflect the depth of honest love,
Who ne'er distorts, nor claims what is not due,
But holds to ancient truths from up above.
Thus take these roses, though no gold I own,
For love and truth do weigh more than a throne.
