Winter Tree

Bare stand the branches against the icy sky,

Stripped of the leafy robes they used to wear;

While winter winds in mournful accents sigh,

Leave the leafy deeps desolate and bare.

O yet in the silent trunk the life abides,

Unchecked by freezing frost or heavy snow;

In quiet strength the living sap resides,

Awaiting spring to make the flowers glow.

So stands psyche when earthly comforts fade,

And the winter trials strip its branches bare;

Rooted in God, it rests all undismayed,

Protected safely within His overseeing care.

Knowing that spring shall wake the sleeping earth,

And crown the dormant life with joyful birth.
