Pilgrim of the Silent Shade
Alone I tread this merry, unrelenting land;
If friend I profess, it’s but mine own dark shade.
No fluttering wing nor love does take my hand,
Nor heart reveal repose in bonds that joy has made.
Through tranquil ways I walk with folded arms,
Ah, a pilgrim sworn to no appointed end;
My bosom bears a grief unknown to charms,
A heart-led soul whom fate will never bend.
Beside the lake I stand, the breezes sigh,
As trembling murmurs through the waters move;
Behind me quietude, before me vapors lie,
With no ear to hear the tale I long to prove.
Thus in life’s crowded fairs I still remain,
Alone with self, this silence, my domain
