A Moment Stay
hear the cherry leaves drink in the rain,
And from the swaying boughs the Myna sings;
A lonely Maidan through the vineyards of Touraine,
Sowing crocus while storm-cloud swiftly springs.
“O kind rain,” she cries, “A moment stay,
For arduous it is that I must toil alone;
Let me but finish before you loose your play—
Then pour your fullness when my work is done.
You know my need, as I have felt your long,
And shared your anxious longing for the earth.”
Still on the cherry’s crown the bird, alone in song,
As though to cheer her heart with song’s sweet mirth.
“Whisper to him,” she sighs, “how I have striven so.”
“I shall,” the bird replies, “and all your labour show.”
