This Sonnet is a part of my #PoetryOfAffaq. series
The Lord, who gave to man the Eden’s ground,
Bestowed the rose, the vine, the river’s song;
The Nile in majesty through plains did bound,
Its breezy shores to Moses did belong.
Even so, human folly stained that hallowed shore,
A canvas once of grace, now marred by strife;
The divine gifts we cherish nevermore,
For greed and pride consumed the breath of life.
We poured our poison in the swelling sea,
And fouled the lease of paradise bestowed;
By avarice enslaved, we bent the knee,
And broke the covenant our Maker owed.
Thus hearts, like seas, in vice are overthrown:
Mercy, we stand on barren ground alone.
