By the solitary Oak
Whilst in my quiet abyss, I glanced to see
Your bosom, cold as winter's sickest breeze.
Ah, see my loyalty, unshaken, stood by thee,
Despite life's setbacks, which like snarling seas
Did rage and roar, after that calm and cease.
And in your eyes, like sapphire, I thought to find
My peace, my jubilant joy, my heart's release.
But you, O disloyal friend, did prove a tease.
Your vows, like sunset leaves, withered and faded,
And in my eager eyes, your love did dwell.
For me, a monastic life the nature portrayed—
I’m so grateful, I breathe, and all is still well.
Under the shade of this solitary oak, I pour
My plaint, and seek repose in heaven's roar.
